Reference photos are one of the easiest ways to start a conversation about your hair. They give us a visual language for something that can otherwise be surprisingly hard to describe. “Warm, but not too warm.” “Short, but I still want to put it up.” “Layers, but not layers layers.”
We know what you mean. Usually.
But a reference photo is exactly that: a reference. The best result probably won’t be an exact copy, and we don’t think it should be.
What Are You Actually Looking At?
One of the most useful parts of a consultation is figuring out why you saved the photo in the first place.
Maybe you think you love the haircut, but what you’re really responding to is the fringe. Maybe it’s not the exact shade of blonde you want, but the brightness around the face. Maybe you saved a copper because of its richness, not necessarily because you want to walk out with that precise color.
Those distinctions matter because they give your stylist somewhere to go.
Sometimes the answer is obvious. Sometimes we’ll pull up three photos you brought in and realize they all have one thing in common that you hadn’t noticed.
That’s where things get interesting.
Your Hair Gets a Say, Too
Two people can bring in the exact same reference and leave with two very different versions of it.
Texture, density, natural movement, existing color, previous services, and how your hair lifts all influence what’s possible and what will look best.
A razor-cut shape on fine, relatively straight hair isn't going to behave exactly like that same shape on thick waves. A copper formula that looks incredible on one starting color might need to be completely reworked for another. Even the placement of a few lighter pieces can change depending on how someone wears their hair most days.
That isn’t your hair getting in the way of the inspiration.
It’s the information we use to make the inspiration yours.
Then There’s the Part Where You Have to Live With It
The photo gets us into the conversation. Your actual life helps us decide where to take it.
How much time do you want to spend styling your hair?
How often do you realistically want to be back in the salon?
Do you wear your hair naturally most of the week? Air-dry it? Heat-style it? Put it up by Wednesday?
A look can be technically achievable and still make absolutely no sense for the person who has to live with it.
We’re interested in both.
Sometimes that means adjusting a shape so it still looks good without a 30-minute blowout. Sometimes it means changing the placement of your color so the grow-out feels better. Sometimes it means getting you close to the inspiration over a few reservations instead of compromising your hair to get there in one.
The goal isn't just good hair when you leave the salon.
It’s good hair on a random Tuesday three weeks later.
The Best Part Is the Interpretation
