What Makes a Haircut Feel Like You?

There are a thousand ways to cut a bob.

Some are sharp and precise. Some are soft and a little undone. Some look like they belong in a French film. Others look like they belong backstage at a show where everyone knows the drummer.

Technically, they're all bobs.

But they don't feel anything alike.

And that's the interesting thing about hair. The difference between a haircut that looks good and one that feels like you isn't always something you can measure in inches.

It's Not Just the Cut. It's How You Wear It.

Think about the people whose hair you always notice.

Chances are, it's not because they have the most technically complicated haircut in the room.

It's because their hair makes sense on them.

A blunt fringe. A slightly grown-out pixie. Long layers that never seem particularly styled. A haircut that's been more or less the same for twenty years because, frankly, why mess with it?

There's a certain ease to someone who knows what they like.

And that doesn't mean sticking with one look forever. Personal style changes. Sometimes slowly, sometimes all at once.

Your hair gets to change with it.

The Small Things Aren't Always Small

A few inches can change the entire feeling of a haircut.

So can the weight of a fringe, the shape around your ears, or whether the ends are blunt or a little broken up.

Take a short haircut. It can be polished, romantic, architectural, playful, or completely irreverent. Same general length. Very different result.

Those choices are part of what makes hair personal.

They're also why we don't believe there's one universally correct haircut for a particular face shape, age, or personal style.

There's room for interpretation. Quite a lot of it, actually.

You Don't Have to Look Like Everyone Else

There's always going to be a haircut everyone seems to be getting.

And sometimes it's a really good haircut.

But liking a trend doesn't mean you have to wear it exactly the way it's being worn everywhere else.

Maybe you like the shape of a popular cut but want something softer. Maybe you love the idea of a fringe but prefer yours a little less perfect. Maybe you want a haircut that looks better slightly messy than it does freshly styled.

Or maybe you want the exact opposite.

There's no particular prize for having the most effortless hair in the room. If you love a precise, polished finish, that's just as much a personal style choice.

The point isn't to look different for the sake of looking different.

It's to have some say in how you look.

Sometimes You Know It When You See It

Not everyone walks into the salon with a perfectly articulated sense of personal style.

You might know you want something different without knowing exactly what. You might love your current haircut but feel like something about it isn't quite right anymore.

That's fine.

Sometimes the answer is a completely new shape. Sometimes it's moving a part, changing the fringe, or taking just enough weight out to make the whole thing sit differently.

And sometimes, after talking it through, the answer is that your current haircut is pretty great.

We're not particularly interested in changing things just to change them.

We're interested in getting them right.

Good Hair Should Feel Like Your Hair

At Steel + Lacquer, we don't have a signature haircut. We have a lot of different people, with a lot of different ideas about what good hair looks like.

That's how we like it.

A great haircut can be quiet or dramatic. Classic or unconventional. Perfectly polished or deliberately imperfect.

It doesn't have to make a statement.

But it should feel like something you'd choose.

And when it does, you usually don't have to think about it quite so much.

No signature look. Just really good hair.
